Theo Walcott has hailed Mesut Ozil as a “very exciting” signing after the Germany international completed a deadline day move to The Emirates.
The 24-year-old midfielder penned a five-year deal with the north London side after the Gunners smashed their club-record transfer to agree a £42.5m fee with Real Madrid for the German playmaker.Ozil made 155 appearances for Los Blancos after joining Real Madrid from Werder Bremen three years ago for a fee of around £12.4m.
And Walcott, who has previously faced Ozil when playing for England’s Under-21 side, backed the former Real Madrid star to shine at Arsenal over the coming seasons.
“It’s very exciting. I played against him for England Under 21s, he showed his qualities then and he has showed them since,” Walcott told a news conference at England’s training camp on Tuesday.
“He’s a great addition and personally I’m looking forward to playing alongside him.”
Arsenal’s record signing Ozil has already set his sights on helping the club end their eight-year trophy drought.
“While talking with Arsène Wenger I immediately felt what I had missed at last,” Ozil said.
“This is 100 per cent faith in me. I want to help this club to finally win titles again.
“I am thrilled to be joining a club of the stature of Arsenal. It will be great for my own personal development as a player.”
